Downtown prepares to contemplate alternate looks for Center Street

As part of the scoping study being conducted for a potential redesign of the street, community leaders had discussed putting the perennial suggestion of converting the street into a pedestrian zone to the test with a temporary closure. As the summer ends, that has yet to take shape, but Rutland Redevelopment Authority Executive Director Brennan Duffy said the idea hasn’t been abandoned.

City officials gung-ho on Center Street changes

Organizers say a temporary reconfiguration of Center Street has been a big hit, and the city is looking at a grant to study a more permanent redesign. The Community and Economic Development Committee voted unanimously Thursday to recommend that the Board of Aldermen apply for a $30,000 Agency of Transportation grant to study permanently changing the street.

Center Street Alley Project Complete

After 10 years, roughly $1.4 million and several redesigns, the Center Street Alley project officially concluded Tuesday with a ribbon cutting on what the city has officially named the Center Street Marketplace Park. The former alley is now a patch of grass surrounded by new sidewalk, lights and a fence, with the “Stone Legacy” marble statue in the corner.
